Headway for Therapists: My Experience and What to Know

My short answer

Headway has been a good platform for my Florida private practice, especially for reimbursement and insurance administration. It pays me more per session than the other insurance platforms I have tried, its support has generally been helpful, and it removes much of the work involved in credentialing, eligibility, claims, and payment.

The main limitations have been credentialing speed and referrals. My paneling experience was slower than it was with Grow Therapy, and Headway has sent me very few clients directly. I would view it primarily as an insurance and practice-management platform, not as a reliable replacement for your own marketing.

Headway helps independently licensed mental health professionals join insurance networks and manage insurance-based care through one platform. The session rates have been strong for me

Headway currently pays me more per session than the other insurance platforms I have tried. For me, that has been its clearest advantage. A meaningful rate difference adds up quickly when you see several insurance clients each week.

Support has generally been helpful

Timelines can depend on the payer, state, license, application completeness, existing network status, and other factors outside the platform’s control.

If you are planning to leave a job or need insurance income by a specific date, do not build your entire transition plan around the shortest advertised timeline. Apply early and keep financial breathing room for delays.

Headway has not been a meaningful referral source for me

Headway has generated very few direct referrals for my practice. Other therapists may have different results, since visibility can depend on specialty, location, accepted insurance, profile quality, availability, and local demand. Still, I would not join expecting the marketplace alone to fill a caseload.

In my case, Psychology Today has been a much stronger source of inquiries. A professional website, directory profile, referral network, and relationships with other clinicians may remain important even after you join Headway.

Rates and payer access vary

My positive reimbursement experience should not be treated as a universal rate comparison. A platform that pays well for one Florida LMHC may be less competitive for another license or state. Ask to see the rates for the services you actually provide, especially your most common CPT codes, before deciding whether the arrangement works financially.

You still need to understand the contract and clinical rules

Convenience does not remove your professional responsibilities. Review documentation deadlines, treatment-plan expectations, cancellation policies, billing rules, audit procedures, payer requirements, and what happens if you later leave the platform. Platform templates can help, but they do not replace clinical judgment or knowledge of your own licensing and ethical requirements.

My verdict

I think Headway is worth considering for therapists who want to build an insurance-based private practice. It has been reliable, supportive, and financially worthwhile for me, and it pays me more per session than the other platforms I have tried.

I would not rely on Headway alone for referrals, and I would apply before I urgently need a paneling date. Its strongest role in my practice is helping me accept insurance and manage the administrative side of care after I have connected with a client.
